The Russian military launched a strike on the Ukrainian port of Chernomorsk in the Odessa region, targeting several moored ships with AI-powered kamikaze drones, the Russian Defense Ministry announced Sunday. According to RT, at least four vessels, including a converted fishing boat serving as a drone carrier, were hit during the operation aimed at crippling Ukraine’s Black Sea military logistics.
The ministry stated that the attack sought to reduce Ukraine’s ability to transport weapons and military equipment via the Black Sea. Among the damaged targets were a ro-ro ferry, a bulker, a patrol boat, and the fishing vessel repurposed to deploy sea drones. All strikes were carried out using turbojet Geran-4 'Seeker' drones, which reportedly employ artificial intelligence-driven machine vision to autonomously locate and lock onto their targets without operator guidance.
Video footage released by the Russian military showed the kamikaze drones as they approached and engaged their targets, focusing on the vessels’ superstructures. However, the extent of the damage and any resulting casualties have not been disclosed, and no follow-up drone surveillance imagery has been made public.
On Friday, the Defense Ministry reaffirmed Russia’s capability to overcome any air defense systems supplied by Western countries to Ukraine, declaring the ability to strike any target across Ukrainian territory. The ministry highlighted continued assaults on Ukrainian seaport infrastructure and vessels believed to be transporting weapons to Kyiv’s forces.
Recently, Russia has intensified long-range attacks against Ukraine’s military industrial complexes and dual-use infrastructure, employing a combination of kamikaze drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. Moscow claims these operations are retaliatory measures against Ukrainian "terrorist attacks" targeting Russian civilian infrastructure amid setbacks on the battlefield.
